Ikat: Abbreviated fabrics of Uzbekistan

The very word «icat» came from European terminology and is not indigenously Uzbek. In Uzbekistan, such tissues are referred to as abras, which means «clouds» in Persian. The term more accurately reflects the local perception of these tissues, as their smooth, leaking patterns do resemble clouds or water divorces.
Ikata is a unique technique of hand-painting and weaving that characterizes the traditional textile art of Central Asia. These tissues have a rich history rooted in the ancient crafts traditions of the Silk Road. Because of a complex coloring and braiding system, cathedral patterns have a characteristic blurry effect, making them recognizable.
